Italy is internationally recognised for its excellence in the field of glass, both at an artistic and industrial level. In 2022, the United Nations International Year of Glass, the two most important Italian festivals dedicated to the promotion and enhancement of glass – Vision Milan Glass Week and The Venice Glass Week – are joining forces to present a major new initiative: The Italian Glass Weeks. The aim of the initiative is to showcase, promote and support glass in Italy at both a national and international level.
The Italian Glass Weeks will take place in Milan from 10th to 18th September 2022, and in Venice from 17th to 25th September 2022. The programme will feature a wide range of initiatives aimed at the Italian and international consumer public, including exhibitions and installations, guided tours, demonstrations and workshops, as well as a series of B2B events for companies operating in the glass industry.
2022 has been designated by the United Nations as the International Year of Glass.
The Italian Glass Weeks is part of the official programme of the 2022 United Nations International Year of Glass. Taking place over the course of a fortnight in the international cities of Milan and Venice, it will be Italy’s largest and most important event dedicated to glass, and one of the most significant glass sector events in Europe.
The Venice Glass Week is a non-profit initiative organised by a Committee made up of the Comune di Venezia and three of the city’s principal cultural institutions with considerable experience and expertise in the field of glass – Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia, Fondazione Giorgio Cini – LE STANZE DEL VETRO and Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti – together with Consorzio Promovetro Murano, the organisation that serves as the guardian of original Murano glass production and manages the Vetro Artistico® Murano trademark of the Veneto Region.
Vision Milan Glass Week is a project of VITRUM, the international trade fair for the glass processing industry which takes place every two years in Milan. The sole shareholder of VITRUM is GIMAV, the Trade Association that is part of CONFINDUSTRIA, which represents manufacturers and suppliers of machines, accessories, equipment and products for glass processing.
In 2021 the event was supported by the Regione Lombardia and Città Metropolitana di Milano, and was financed by the Ministero degli Esteri and Cooperazione Internazionale through ICE Agenzia.
The Italian Glass Weeks
A broad spectrum of events for all audiences will be dedicated to artistic glass – both historical and contemporary – organised by museums, institutions, companies, artists, designers and other individuals from Italy and abroad.
A series of innovative B2B Glass Days will be arranged for businesses operating in the glass industry, and VIP Glass Tours will be organised in both Milan and Venice for buyers, investors and collectors.
Glassmaking workshops, demonstrations and tours will be designed to showcase and support the Murano glass industry: a delicate and unique ecosystem which is facing severe challenges due to factors including the pandemic and dramatic increases to the price of gas.
